Got a garage door that screeches and squeals every time it opens and closes? Like fingernails on an old chalkboard, the unpleasant sounds of a noisy garage door can be unsettling. Fortunately, there are things you can do to restore relative quiet and calm.

What’s Causing All the Ruckus?Precision Garage - What to Do When the Garage Door is Too Noisy

Like all mechanical items, garage doors and their openers will always generate some amount of noise. But that’s not what we’re talking about here. The sharp sounds of grinding are generally caused by abrasive levels of friction. The track, gears, rollers, hinges, chain, and lift mechanism can all contribute to the noises.

These problems tend to happen more frequently with age and use. If left in this poorly functioning state, the damage can become much more serious. At some point, the system can no longer be repaired, and can even become a safety hazard.

What Should Be Done to Fix the Problem?

Try applying a quality garage door lubricant to silence the door. You can lubricate nearly any part of the door, including the springs, gears, track, rollers, hinges, and even the chain if needed. This will free up movement by lubricating any sticking points in the system. Be sure to use a silicon spray-on lubricant. It’s a long-lasting product that won’t drip or attract grime and sand, which will only cause further damage to your garage door’s components.

You can also use white lithium grease to lubricate the door. This product needs to be applied by hand, making it a bit messier and tedious to apply. The advantage is that this product is less harsh on metals over time.
