Many people ask us how long they can anticipate the lifting mechanism of their garage door to last. It’s a fair question that doesn’t always have a straightforward answer. It depends on:Precision Garage - How Long Will a Garage Door Opener Last

  • The build quality and durability of your opener
  • How often you use the garage
  • How well you maintain the opener
  • How well you maintain the entire garage door system

High-quality garage door openers are built to last between 10-15 years, while lower quality brands tend to fail sooner than that. Even with good upkeep, the quality of build material and fabrication will impact the life expectancy of the lift product.

Garage Door Springs

Generally, you will need repair for your garage door springs long before your new opener. The life span of springs is measured in cycles as opposed to years of use. A cycle is considered to be one opening and closing of the door.

Spring types vary, depending on the garage door system itself. Tension springs found above the door or beside the track will endure 5000-10,000 cycles. Torsion springs found above the garage door will last between 15,000 to 20,000 cycles. If you use the door more frequently, you’ll move through your cycle count much more quickly.

Other Moving Parts

There are several other moving parts of a garage door that are involved with the performance of each open and close cycle. These parts will also wear out over time, so maintaining them is also important to do. Neglect of any part of the garage door system will add stress and wear to other parts of the system and shorten the useful life of the door –including the opener.

Annual Inspection

At least once a year, be sure to inspect your garage door system. Be sure to do the following:

  • Visually inspect the system, including springs, track, rollers, hinges, bolts, cables
  • Lubricate all moving parts with proper lubrication (not WD-40)
  • Check the balance of the garage door
  • Perform safety tests for automatic opening
